Models go from 'backstage frenzy' to 'catwalk calm' during Dolores Cortez show

If you catwalk it, they will come.

And they did. The fashion flock flew to South Beach for Miami Swim Week's slate of swimsuit-related shows, parties and product launches last July.

Front-row seats to get the scoop on swimwear for this summer were coveted by fashion bloggers, magazine editors, wardrobe stylists and C-list celebs (Brooke Burke/David Charvet, Karina Smirnoff, Cheryl Burke, Christina Milian, Wilmer Valderrama, Nick Cannon).

So here are the trends hitting stores now that they were all checking out:

PLETHORA OF PRINTS

Echoing the mega-trend in ready-to-wear from this past fall/winter season, swimwear designers are predicting plenty of prints. The exotic looks are a heady mix of tribal, animal (especially leopard and snakeskin), ikat, medallion, scarf, tropical fauna/flora as well as graphic black and white. And yes, it is mixed and unmatched. You just can't go wrong as long as you keep proportion in check.

COVERED-UP COOLNESS

In one of those contradictions that fashion is famous for; it was the retro-looks that seemed fresher and sexier...from the return of the disco-glitz one-piece of the '70s to the pin-up girl high-waist looks from the '40s. The message from designers? Sometimes being more covered-up is an invitation for people to look more closely.

JEWELRY ADORNMENT

Designer "droolery" effects - from brooch closures on caftans to beaded/stone detailing on swimsuits - bump up the swimsuit from "basic boat" to "luxurious yacht."
