Fafa Rocha auditions for America's Next Top Model at Nova University in Davie back in February of 2011 (Photo by Mike Stocker, South Florida Sun Sentinel / January 3, 2013) |
- We had a online chat Wednesday, Jan. 2 on the SFL/CW Facebook page about the open casting call for Tyra Banks' "America's Next Top Model" Saturday at the Art Institute in Fort Lauderdale.
- This time around the producers are looking for male and female models.
- Some of the model hopefuls had some good questions that might help you out before your audition, so check out this recap:
-
Rod Hagwood Remember, if you are not registered by 2 p.m. the judges and producers will now see you. Every year there are some stragglers and it breaks my heart.

-
Laticia ChaseLove Griffin So how does the process work? We come with the application, head shots etc, and our copies confirming our identity and we wait to be called in?
-
Felicia Raia Blanski Hi Rod, can you give us a few makeup, clothes, and hair tips that will wow the casting team? Thanks
-
Rod Hagwood Yes. You are moved through the process just like any other casting call. Groups are moved through the process and the last part is a group of you will be shown into a room with the judges. They then look at your info and ask you to walk the runway and they also get you on video.
-
Rod Hagwood Felicia - you don't want your makeup to be too heavy because the judges will think you are covering something up. You hair is a tricky question. If you think you look better with your hair up, then make sure that you can put it down quickly if the judges ask you. Oterhwise it's better to wear your hair the way that makes you comfortable.
-
-
Rod Hagwood As for what to wear - the judges need to see you body, so form-fitting is best. But don't wear anything so tight that it comes off as vulgar. Remember, you are on video too and that adds 5 to 10 pounds. If you wear something too tight then it looks like a hooker.
-
Rod Hagwood Jay - go to this page and all the criteria is laid out for you: http://www.facebook.com/SFLCW/app_14167664298
-
-
Laticia ChaseLove Griffin When will you know if you've been choosen to go to the casting in Los Angelos?
-
Rod Hagwood Jay - I looked at your Facebook page and you seem to be very athletic. Play that up during your audition.
-
-
Rod Hagwood You won't know that day, but they will contact you fairly soon that your video and comments are being sent on to Tyra's production company.
-
-
-
SFLCW Hi Jay, if you are trying to access it on a smart phone or tablet it won't work you need to be on a desktop or laptop. Good Luck and Look forward to seeing you on Saturday.

Rod Hagwood Another really important thing - actually it's the MOST important thing - is to make sure you bring your A game when it comes to personality. You can be gorgeous and take the best photos in the world, but this is a TV show and it's all about entertaining people.
-
Rod Hagwood There's nothing wrong with being shy, but if you are then this might not be the opportunity for you. Tyra and her producers are looking for engaging people who can keep an audience interested throughout a season/cycle.
-
Yvonne S Houston Rod please checkout modelmayhem.com/2825724 and tell me what you think my strong points are. thank you!

-
Rod Hagwood The profile says that u r either awaiting approval or that you have removed your profile. But I looked at your Facebook page and I'dd say you have a killer "smolder." I owuld use that and then quickly show the judges that you also can be versatile enought o be all-American with a big friendly smile.
-
Rod Hagwood Good question Laticia - I'd say that the biggest mistake is that they kind of throw a diva fit thinking that it will make them stand out. It does. But for all the wrong reasons. The producers are looking for someone who isn't going to take a lot of time....which is money in the TV game. You want to have a big personality but also show that you are easy to work with.
-
Rod Hagwood Also - and this one is kind of small, but girls do it all the time - and that is they show up in shoes they've either never worn before or that are too high for them (trying to appear taller). They end up walking like a donkey on the catwalk.
-
Laticia ChaseLove Griffin On the head shot and the full length shots we're required to bring should they be the standard -plain background, no pose- photos? Or is it better to bring photos from photo shoots?
-
-
Rod Hagwood Either will do Laticia. They are looking for how the light hits your bone structure, whether you photograph young or old and if you know your best angles.
-
Rod Hagwood Yvonne - you have a long torso. Wear something that shows that off. Keep your shoulder down and relaxed so that your neck is lengthened.
-
-
Rod Hagwood I know people tell you all the time to "be yourself." But that really is good advice. If you are nervous and flub what you wanted to say, then just admit it. Say something like, "I am so nervous. That isn't what I meant to say at all." Just play off of your nerves, which will make you more empathetic to the judges. Everyone has been nervous before so they'll understand. What they do NOT want to see is someone whose nerves get the best of them. I've had girls break down and sob. They were not emotionally ready for a reality TV show.

-
-
-
-
Rod Hagwood Your body is re-dunk-u-lously hot. Be careful of tipping your face upward in photos because it makes you look older. When you tilt your chin down your eyes appear bigger and that makes you look younger.
-
-
Rod Hagwood Here's one last tip for you (especially the girls): when you do your runway walk, imagine your favorite jam in your head. The reason Naomi Campbell became legendary for her catwalk was because she was a dancer. The music and the rhythm (in your head) will give your walk that extra oomph....without bumping and grinding of course.
-
SFLCW Thank you models for your questions! A huge Thank You to Rod for your time and advice! Good Luck to all, see you Saturday!\
-
Rod Hagwood Good luck to you all and if you want to ask me something later, feel free to send me a Facebook message or ask me on my blog:

Rod Hagwood: I could have sworn I was interviewing for "fashionable" editor back in 1990 when I applied for this job. I imagined I was just going to sashay around the newsroom wearing an array of fabulous designer ensembles. Imagine my disappointment when I found out my bosses wanted me to actually work...instead of working it.
