When a canoe is more than a boat

As one of the few people in Florida who can carve a functional canoe from a cypress tree, Seminole artist Pedro O. Zepeda feels a sense of responsibility when he talks to people about his Native American culture.

"Even though I know I don't represent the entirety of the tribe, someone that meets me may form their opinion of the entirety of the tribe by their interaction with me," Zepeda says. "It's kind of like being a pastor: People kind of expect you to conduct yourself in a certain way, and I kind of feel that, my Seminole side, I need to represent it well and in a positive way."
