Lobster population appears in 'good shape' ahead of miniseason

Fishermen can expect to find plenty of lobsters when miniseason returns July 25-26, a researcher with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission said, assuaging concerns that lobster populations have not fully recovered from Hurricane Irma.

Tom Matthews, a research administrator for the FWC Institute in Marathon, said, “the lobster population appears in good shape, and we do not anticipate any long-term effect from Hurricane Irma on the lobster population.”

Matthews said the storm may have opened new diving holes and led to an increase in spiny lobster populations.
