Great American Beach Party canceled in Fort Lauderdale as Alberto looms

Fort Lauderdale officials announced Friday that the Great American Beach Party has been canceled, as Subtropical Storm Alberto prepares to give South Florida a soaking this Memorial Day weekend.

City spokesman Chaz Adams told the Sun-Sentinel on Friday they chose to scrub the sandy bash on the beach after Alberto formed in the northwestern Caribbean earlier this morning. Fort Lauderdale police had been in contact with the National Weather Service to monitor the storm’s path, he says.

“Even though [South Florida] isn’t in the direct path of Alberto, there is risk of heavy rains, rip currents, high winds, lightning and the possibility of floods,” Adams says.
