3 cruise ships pull into port

SAN DIEGO -- Three cruise ships pulled into San Diego at daybreak today, prompting Port of San Diego officials to warn of potentially heavy traffic near the downtown waterfront.

Holland America's Zuiderdam and Westerdam berthed at opposite sides of the B Street Pier, and Celebrity Cruises' Infinity tied up at the north side of the Port Pavilion on Broadway Pier, according to the port.

The ocean liners arrived one after another between 6 and 7 a.m.

The Zuiderdam brought more than 2,000 passengers, the Westerdam more than 1,600, and the Infinity more than 2,100. Several hundred are expected come and go from each vessel.

Port officials warned that the cruise ship activity, combined with construction work to revitalize the bayfront's appearance, could cause heavy traffic.
