Best rooftop bar in South Florida 2017: Ocho

Ocho (in the Soho Beach House)

4385 Collins Ave., Miami Beach; 786-507-7900;

The first thing you need to know is that Ocho is in the Soho Beach House, a private club blended into a boutique hotel. So you can either get a room (the least expensive one will run you about $650) or you can cozy up to an existing member. A much easier option is to get invited to one of the parties frequently being thrown at Ocho. Seriously, there are South Beachers who manage to get on so many guest lists at the exclusive eighth floor alfresco bar, that you might assume they live in the hotel. That’s because the usual member is somehow related to the fashion, film, music, advertising, art or media industries. See? That’s a wide field to pluck from. Volunteer for one of the insider’s charity events, and you’ll find yourself invited to the post-party. And you don’t have to shell out the annual fee, which talk has it is somewhere in the $500-$2,000 range (depending on what type you want). Housed in the old Sovereign Hotel, next door to the Fontainebleau, the rooftop bar at Soho has fabulous views, both of the beach as well as celebrity guests who let their hair down in the no-social-media, no-paparazzi-please zone. The sunset DJ parties offer your best chance to check out hip-hop royalty mixing with fashion models. Oh, and one more thing: Order a margarita. You won’t regret it.
