Best crab in South Florida 2017: Joe's Stone Crab

Joe’s Stone Crab

11 Washington Ave., Miami Beach; 305-673-0365;

There are cheaper and more scenic places to munch on stone crab, but none will deliver the same endorphin rush of Joe’s, with its frantic crowds, black-jacket-and-bow-tie clad servers, creamed spinach, hash-browned potatoes, mustard-mayo-and-Worcestershire dipping sauce and platters of fresh-cracked crab that Damon Runyon described as “priced by the karat” with shells “harder than a landlord’s heart.” Despite being open only from October through May, when stone crab is in season, it is one of the nation’s top-grossing restaurants. Joe’s was founded in 1913, and it is a treasured institution for a reason: It is great.
