Kiss Chili Cookoff 2014: Rascal Flatts, Cassadee Pope top bill

The music lineup for 99.9 Kiss Country’s 2014 Chili Cookoff was announced Monday morning,  and includes headliners Rascal Flatts, West Palm Beach’s own Cassadee Pope, Joe Nichols, Brantley Gilbert and Thomas Rhett.

The solid if unspectacular Jan. 26 bill was announced at 7 a.m. by WKIS morning DJs Kenny Walker and UTurn Laverne, who followed the news with an hour of music dominated by cookoff acts:   Rascal Flatts was represented by “Life is a Highway,” “Fast Cars and Freedom” and “These Days”;  Brantley Gilbert’s “Country Must Be Country Wide” got played twice, along with “More Than Miles”; Nichols’ “Sunny and 75” was joined by “Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off”; and  “It Goes Like This” by Thomas Rhett was played twice in the first hour.

Curiously, “South Florida’s Country Station” played only one song by the lone South Florida native on the bill, Cassadee Pope’s “Wasting All These Tears.” Pope, of course, came up through the local pop-rock ranks before moving to country after winning Season 3 of the NBC reality TV singing competition “The Voice.”

She followed "The Voice" this fall with the CMT reality show "Cassadee Pope: Frame by Frame," a behind-the-scenes look at her life on tour and in the recording studio.

Pope’s fans are an enthusiastic and well-organized army that communicates via the Twitter feed @CassIsBadAss, and as a ticket-seller she should prove to be much more than the token female on the bill.

The last cookoff  lineup was led by Luke Bryan, Ronnie Dunn, Thompson Square, Florida Georgia Line and Kacey Musgraves.  The 2012 bill featured the Zac Brown Band, Bryan, Clay Walker, Chris Cagle and Sonia Leigh.

The 2014 Kiss Country Chili Cookoff will be held Jan. 26 at C.B. Smith Park, 900 N. Flamingo  Road, Pembroke Pines. Tickets are $45, and go on sale 10 a.m. Friday at
