Mr. Nick's Sub Shoppe, a breakfast and lunch destination for downtown Fort Lauderdale denizens for more than four decades, is moving from its Andrews Avenue location to a spot less than a mile away, near the Broward County Main Library.
Mr. Nick’s has been in business for 42 years next door to the venerable Grady’s Bar & Grill, whose owners sold the property at 901 S. Andrews Ave. to developers in 2016.
Home to cheese steak sandwiches whose extraordinary local celebrity defied their humble surroundings, Mr. Nick’s served their last subs in the original location on Friday, with plans to open in the new shop on Jan. 2.
The new location is on the north side of the New River, at 108 SE First St., near Broward Boulevard.
Grady's Bar & Grill was one of Fort Lauderdale’s oldest bars, in operation since 1940.
The family of original proprietor Grady Copeland sold the property to a Florida company called Highlands Equity Investments. A Copeland family spokesman said the company plans to develop the site as a mixed-use property for retail and residential uses.
For now, the tavern is being operated by a longtime Grady’s employee as Marty’s Bar & Grill.
