Smith’s recently completed winter tour included sold-out shows at the Forum in Los Angeles and New York City’s Madison Square Garden. In a review, The New York Times’ Jon Pareles noted, “His sound is startling… When he sings a melisma, the pitches are as clearly delineated as keys on a piano.”
The four Grammys that Smith won recently set a record for a British artist’s debut album. “In The Lonely Hour,” named best pop vocal album, has sold more than 5 million copies, with the single “Stay With Me” (winner of both record and song of the year Grammys) going quadruple platinum. Smith also won the Grammy for best new artist.
But perhaps Smith’s finest moment at the Grammys was his quick onstage observation that he began to make music that mattered to people only after he stopped worrying about criticism of his weight. If Smith can achieve half of what Luther Vandross did, he’ll have a career to be proud of.
