Selwyn Birchwood bringing sweet 'Poison' to Delray Beach

Internationally touring young blues guitarist Selwyn Birchwood will perform Saturday, June 30, at the Arts Garage in Delray Beach.

The “indelibly modern, next-generation bluesman” (Washington Post) will share music from his latest album, “Pick Your Poison.” A genre-bending 2017 collection of blues and roots music, the album earned Birchwood nominations at the 2018 Blues Music Awards in the Contemporary Blues Male Artist and Contemporary Blues Album categories. He finished behind winner Keb’ Mo’ in each category. No shame in that.

The album is the follow-up to Birchwood’s critically lauded 2014 Alligator Records debut, “Don’t Call No Ambulance,” which won the Blues Music Award for Best New Artist Album.

The Orlando native, 33, has made a name for himself from the Chicago Blues Festival to the Czech Republic, with a slashing attack on six-string and lap-steel guitars and a gritty vocal style reminiscent of blues master Albert Collins.

Birchwood has been on a national club tour, but the intimacy of the Arts Garage will offer a unique showcase, and he should be especially comfortable back in his home state. You’ll know if he struts onstage barefoot.
