Schwifty Things, a 'Rick and Morty' and 'Stranger Things' pop-up bar, lands in Miami

“Stranger Things” and “Rick and Morty,” two science-fiction-leaning TV shows with a rabid millennial following, are crossing over inside a Miami bar.

On Monday, June 25, downtown Zest Bar and Lounge will be transformed into Schwifty Things, a pop-up cocktail bar pairing the cerebral Adult Swim cartoon series with the 1980s-set Netflix horror-drama. To celebrate the interdimensional-themed shows, Schwifty Things will offer a menu of themed “Rick and Morty” molecular-mixology cocktails, DJ sounds and enough “Stranger Things”-inspired decor to make a Demogorgon feel at home.

The team of Will Thompson and bartender C.J. Ramos of the Brickell cocktail bar Better Days are behind the pop-up concept. For Schwifty Things, Ramos says, the bar should resemble “The Upside Down meets interstellar space travel,” a reference to the dystopian realm in “Stranger Things” and the spacefaring adventures of wisecracking grandpa Rick and his grandson, Morty. (The Adult Swim series was renewed for 70 more episodes in May, while “Stranger Things” is currently in production on its third season.)

“I just wanted to celebrate Rick and Morty’s intelligent humor and dry philosophical sarcasm with ‘80s nostalgia from ‘Stranger Things,’ ” says Ramos, 29, a molecular mixologist who spent a year abroad learning cocktailmaking in London.

There will be 11 molecular-mixology cocktails, including the Morty Rita, a margarita rimmed with Szechuan sauce; the Demogorgon Egg, a cocktail with tequila, strawberry and pineapple; a Pickle Rick Shot, a whiskey shot served inside a hollowed-out pickle (don’t ask); and Eleven’s Eggos, a cocktail garnished with a Belgian waffle wedge, a callout to telekinetic “Stranger Things” character Eleven’s favorite meal. Each cocktail costs $10.

If that’s not enough absurdity, DJ duo X3SR will spin a remix of the “Stranger Things” synth-pop soundtrack against decor re-creating the blinking, Christmas-light alphabet used on the show. During the event, Wynwood mural artist Muta Santiago will paint a canvas mashing up “Stranger Things” and “Rick and Morty,” and swag giveaways will feature merchandise from both shows.

Schwifty Things, a “Rick and Morty” and ”Stranger Things”-themed pop-up bar, will be open 6-10 p.m. Monday, June 25, at Zest Miami, 200 S. Biscayne Blvd., in Miami. Admission is free. Call 305-374-9378 or go to the Facebook event page.
