Hialeah poker room expands

Fuller house: Poker room adds tables @HialeahPark.

Hialeah Park's poker room, which has boomed since opening in September 2013, has completed an expansion, creating a high-limit area called King's Court.

That expands the number of tables from 22 to 33, says Steve Calabro, vice president of casino operations. Hialeah remodeled the grandstand immediately south of the existing poker room to add the tables.

"We have put ourselves in a position to offer more and larger tournaments to the poker players in Miami and South Florida," Calabro says.

The card room also has an expanded kitchen.

Hialeah's poker room raked in $751,453 in March, according to state figures. That's almost as much as Miami-Dade rivals Magic City ($575,623) and Casino Miami ($207,840) combined.

Nelson Costa, director of poker operations, says Hialeah modeled the new VIP area based on what many casinos in Las Vegas have done, with three semiprivate areas with larger tables and charging stations for cell phones and tablet computers.

Eventually, Hialeah would like to hold larger tournaments, Costa says.
