ABC stuns with 'Bachelor,' 'DWTS' casting

ABC has viewers talking about the casting on 'Dancing With the Stars' and 'The Bachelor'

A friend writes: "That Ryan Lochte-Cheryl Burke pairing is disaster waiting to happen. I feel certain he has no rhythm."

We'll learn more when "Dancing With the Stars" begins its 23rd season Sept. 12 on ABC.

But the network had people talking in the morning with the news that former Gov. Rick Perry, Vanilla Ice and former NFL star Calvin Johnson Jr. will compete on the dance contest in the coming season.

In the evening, ABC had more people talking about the casting of Nick Viall as the star of the next "Bachelor," beginning in January.

ABC billed it as a "stunning announcement" -- and it certainly stunned many of Viall's detractors.

He was the runner-up on seasons of "The Bachelorette" starring Kaitlyn Bristowe and Andi Dorfman. Now he's taking part on "Bachelor in Paradise" on the ABC schedule.

ABC used the casting to tease to that show: "What happened to him at the end of this season’s 'Bachelor in Paradise'? Find out how his summer journey ends and his resolve to find his soul mate and love of his life after comingthisclose three times."

Viall will appear on "Bachelor in Paradise: After Paradise" at 9 p.m. Tuesday.

The other celebrities on "DWTS" this time around are model and TV host Amber Rose, reality star Terra Jolé, race-car driver James Hinchcliffe, singers Jana Kramer and Kenny "Babyface" Edmonds, Olympic gymnast Laurie Hernandez and actors Jake T. Austin, Marilu Henner and Maureen McCormick.

Most of those names had been speculated about before the big announcement Tuesday on "Good Morning America." But the additions of Perry and Vanilla Ice were surprising.

Gymnast Hernandez should have an edge because of her youth, her commitment to training and her pairing with former champ Val Chmerkovskiy.

Will Lochte be able to buckle down? Burke worked wonders with Rob Kardashian, taking him to second place in the show's 13th season.

Six-time winner Derek Hough will dance with Marilu Henner. Her incredible memory inspired fascinating "60 Minutes" interviews and the drama "Unforgettable." How will her mind affect her dancing?

How will Vanilla Ice work with former champ Witney Carson, who got the best out of Alfonso Ribeiro?

Will Rose and former champ Maks Chmerkovskiy be a fiery couple?

What can good sport Emma Slater do with former presidential candidate Perry? She worked well with Bill Engvall, Michael Waltrip and Hayes Grier.

The other pairings: former Detroit Lions star Johnson with Lindsay Arnold; Edmonds with Allison Holker; Hinchcliffe with Sharna Burgess; singer Kramer with Gleb Savchenko; Jolé with Sasha Farber; McCormick with Artem Chigvintsev; and Austin with Jenna Johnson.

If "The Bachelor" doesn't work out for Viall, he could always compete on "Dancing With the Stars."
