Carnival Magic to get upgrades before Port Canaveral debut

Guy's Burgers, more RedFrog, Alchemy Bar and more coming to Carnival Magic

A slew of Carnival Cruise Lines' signature upgrades are coming to Carnival Magic during a two-week dry dock ahead of its Port Canaveral debut this spring.

The line announced several new venues including Guy's Burger Joint and the Alchemy Bar will be added to the Dream-class ship that's set to begin seven-night Caribbean sailings from Port Canaveral beginning April 23.

Also coming will be the RedFrog Rum Bar, BlueIguana Tequila Bar, BlueIguana Cantina taco and burttio bar as well as the Pizzeria del Capitano. The line has been rolling out various parts of what it had called Fun Ship 2.0 to all of its fleet since 2012. Carnival Magic, which debuted in 2011 is coming in for a dry dock inspection, which is required every five years by maritime law.

"Carnival Magic is already a groundbreaking ship," said line president Christine Duffy in a press release. "With these new features we're making this spectacular floating resort even better."

The 3,690-passenger Magic is the second of three Dream-class vessels, the middle child between Carnival Dream, which had previously served Port Canaveral and Carnival Breeze, which sails out of PortMiami. Breeze was the first ship to get all of the new venues that were part of the $500 million refurbishment program when it debuted in 2012, so Magic is on the tail end of the revamps.

Carnival sails three ships out of Port Canaveral, the largest of which is Carnival Sunshine followed by Carnival Valor and Carnival Victory on a variety of itineraries to the Bahamas and Caribbean. Sunshine is making way for Magic, which is coming from Galveston and will mark the return of the line's largest class of ship since Carnival Dream left in 2014.

Top of the new list of venues is the hand-crafter burger restaurant that's a partnership with Food Network's Guy Fieri. Alchemy Bar offers high-end alcoholic drinks served in as if it were a vintage pharmacy and the drinks were prescriptions. The rum and tequila bars will be added poolside while the new pizza venue will offer five hand-tossed pizzas free of charge 24 hours a day. BlueIguana Cantina serves tacos and burritos free of charge.

The ship debuted with many of the line's more popular features including the SportSquare recreation area, suspended ropes course, WaterWorks aqua park and Punchliner Comedy Club. It will offer western Caribbean trips with stops in Cozumel, Mexico;, Belize; Mahogany Bay on Isla Roatan, Honduras and Costa Maya, Mexico and eastern Caribbean trips with stops at St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands; San Juan, Puerto Rico; Grand Turk, Turks & Caicos and either Nassau or Amber Cove in the Bahamas.

There is a special three-day cruise from Port Canaveral to Nassau slates for April 20 prior to its normal Caribbean duties.

Carnival Magic is the first of three big ship debuts for Port Canaveral in 2016. November will see the arrival of Norwegian Epic as well as the current record holder for world's largest cruise ship, Royal Caribbean's Oasis of the Seas. The port currently is home to nine ships including the three from Carnival, three from Disney Cruise Line, two from Royal Caribbean and one for Norwegian., 407-420-5134
