Ways to incorporate reading and storytelling into your family’s day

Want to get your kids into reading? Try these tips:

Read Out Loud

Reading aloud to kids (even older kids) is a great way to incorporate storytelling into your daily routine. Don’t be afraid to use funny voices and lots of facial expressions. Encourage your kids to act out their favorite books, movies and TV shows.

Great Aunt Edna did what?

Pull out the photo album and tell some family stories. Once you get going, it’s hard to stop.

You won’t believe what the butter said!

Get silly at the dinner table. Encourage kids to imagine the personality and character of inanimate objects. What is their backstory? How would they sound if they could speak? What would they say? How did that salt shaker come to be here? Is it enchanted?

This is NOT a shoe.

Give your child an ordinary object (a shoe, a pencil, a spoon). Ask them to imagine that it’s anything other than what it actually is. (A shoe can be a house for a mouse; a pencil is a miniature skyscraper; a spoon is a catapult, etc.). Encourage them to tell you a story about that object.

Yes, and…

This is a group storytelling game that’s lots of fun. One person starts by telling one or two sentences of a story (don’t be afraid to be ridiculous). For example: “I went to the store, and the clerk who waited on me was a parakeet.” The next person picks up the story and continues it, always beginning with the phrase “Yes, and…” For example…”Yes, and the parakeet asked me if I was looking for a new jacket.” The story continues to a “logical” conclusion. Just remember that each person must start with “Yes, and…”

Are we there yet?

Make long drives feel shorter by listening to audiobooks. The library has thousands of great children’s audio books that you can download right to your phone. Storytelling podcasts are a great way to pass the time while stimulating young imaginations.
