Santa is visiting Zoo Miami early this year with a series of gifts for the animal residents.

Holiday Gifts for the Animals is scheduled on weekends throughout December, plus Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve.

Zoo guests can watch the animals open their holiday treats at select times between 10:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. on gift days – starting with tree kangaroos and Asian otters on Dec. 1.

Zookeepers will prepare and deliver the gifts, which range from holiday-themed ice treats (for the large cats and giant river otters) to edible ornaments (elephants) and treat boxes wrapped in holiday paper (meerkats and warty pigs).

On Dec. 15, the Galapagos tortoises will get watermelon wreaths decorated with fruit, and the tapirs will get Christmas Eve gifts of holiday trees with fruit ornaments.

Zoo Miami is open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. daily at 12400 SW 152nd St. Admission is $18.95-$22.95, plus tax. For a complete schedule and more information, visit zoomiami.org or call 305-251-0400.
