The dining website’s bar breakdown justified the top honors by highlighting the Broken Shaker’s cavernous poolside courtyard and daringly spirited cocktails from owners Gabriel Orta and Elad Zvi. The list also highlighted the Broken Shaker’s “romantic” vibe. (The Daily Meal must have found that vibe more refreshing than the many dimly lit, speakeasy-style cocktail haunts in New York and California, which dominated the list with 46 bars combined.)
The Daily Meal’s staff, along with guest restaurateurs, food writers, cocktail bloggers and bartenders, scoured the country to compile the list, judging bars in categories ranging from bartender professionalism to mixology and decor.
The nod is the latest heaping of praise on the Broken Shaker, after recent accolades from Esquire, whose booze hounds also dug its laid-back vibe. The bar also snagged a James Beard Award nomination in 2014 and a coveted 2015 Tales of the Cocktail prize from the Spirited Awards.
The Broken Shaker isn’t the only South Florida bar on the list. Not far behind is Sweet Liberty Drinks and Supply Company in Miami Beach at No. 8, which has also received plenty of praise. Ranked at No. 100 is Square Grouper Tiki Bar in Jupiter, a national landmark and the place where Jimmy Buffett and Alan Jackson once filmed their music video “It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere.”
The Broken Shaker is open 6 p.m.-2 a.m. Monday through Friday and 2 p.m.-3 a.m. Saturday and Sunday at 2727 Indian Creek Drive, in Miami Beach. Call 305-531-2727 or go to FreehandHotels.com/Miami/Broken-Shaker.
