Thanks, science: South Florida museums explore the art of making beer and cocktails

Beer is nothing more than water, hops, yeast and barley, yet somehow it manages to taste like pure wizardry.

The art of brewing will get demystified at the Museum of Discovery and Science in Fort Lauderdale, which will put alcohol under the microscope Nov. 8 during its inaugural “Science of Beer” gathering.

The evening of beer experimentation is part of the museum’s Discovery After Dark series, a quarterly adults-only pairing of suds, food and informative talks. The next event in the series will take place in January or February, according to the museum.

While that museum has beer covered, the South Florida Science Center in West Palm Beach will take on cocktails during its art-drinks-and-gabbing gathering called “Molecubar” on Nov. 15.

Here’s what’s on tap at both gatherings.

Science of Beer

6:30-9 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 8, at Museum of Discovery and Science, 401 SW Second St., Fort Lauderdale; $20-$25, includes museum admission; 954-467-6637 or MODS.org

Learn the difference between a lambic and a dunkel through hands-on demonstrations. The beer experts at Doral’s Biscayne Bay Brewing Company will teach drinkers about “how smell influences taste” with craft-beer samples, while Shooters Waterfront and Grateful Palate Catering will handle the light bites and drinks. Bonus: The museum promises you’ll discover how to achieve a winning beer-pong trajectory. Score.

Molecubar

6-10 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15 at South Florida Science Center, 4801 Dreher Trail North, West Palm Beach; $25-$50, includes museum admission; 561-832-1988 or SFScienceCenter.org

The science-heads at this museum will host the adults-only cocktail event “Molecubar,” a smoke-filled evening of molecular gastronomy demos and light bites paired with Black Coral Rum. Experts will host mixology demos and show off cocktailmaking tricks. When that’s over, take your elixir to the museum’s new exhibit “Dinosaur Invasion!” Also worth noting: There will be karaoke, raffles and laser shows, which are always fun drinking companions.
