Due South releases bourbon barrel aged stout on Saturday

Staff writer

Mike Halker, owner and head brewer at Due South Brewing Co. in Boynton Beach, already knew his Mariana Trench imperial stout was good. It won the gold medal for Best Imperial Stout at the 2014 Best Florida Beer Championship.

But as Halker is wont to do, he got an idea last December to move the stout into barrels from Four Roses Bourbon in Kentucky. The result, he says, satisfies the palates of anyone who loves bourbon and big dark stouts.

“You get the roasted, chocolate, savory, salty and then add the complexity of the bourbon and the oaky woodiness from the barrels,” he says

At noon Saturday, 300, 22-ounce bottles of Bourbon Barrel Aged Mariana Trench go on sale at the brewery for $20 each. The first 50 people who buy a bottle also receive a free poster signed by Halker.

“We brought two kegs of it out at our anniversary party and if it goes the same, I expect that all of the bottles will be gone within 20 or 30 minutes,” says Halker.

During the bottle release party, the taproom will also serve the bourbon aged beer on draft. Tacos Veracruz food truck will be at the brewery from noon to 5 p.m. Dough Dough’s Donut trucks will be there 5-10 p.m.

Due South Brewing Co. is at 2900 High Ridge Road, Boynton Beach, 561-463-2337,
