This 2-year-old Cuban eatery, in The Shops at Pembroke Gardens with vintage memorabilia, black-and-white checkered floor and classic Cuban music, has hired former Executive Chef Alberto Cabrera of Bread + Butter in Coral Gables to infuse a modern touch to some of their dishes.
"It all started in Vegas. We are opening a restaurant together, and on the weekends, we missed Cuban food, so we began cooking Cuban dishes and discovered a chemistry," co-owner Eduardo Araoz says. "We thought it would be great to launch them at Havana through a seasonal menu."
Lunch and dinner have been consolidated into an all-day menu. Additions include Empanadas de Tasajo ($7.95) and the beef frita Cubana sandwich ($11.50). Seasonal selections include fried bacon-wrapped plantain cooked in five-spice syrup and topped with lemon crema ($7), corn casserole topped with smoked oxtail, sunny side-up egg and crispy garlic ($10) and chunks of fried grouper tossed with stewed peppers ($19.95).
End sweet with the torrejas — Cuban French toast with vanilla ice cream and guava maple syrup ($5.95).
The house specialty remains: Pollo Havana 1957, traditional roasted chicken with gravy, rice, black beans, salad and sweet plantains ($16.95).
