Two scoops for you: Ice Cream We Love festival and unicorn ice cream

Just in time for this weekend’s cold snap, frozen serendipity comes to South Florida via the Ice Cream We Love festival, which brings 18 ice-cream vendors to Bal Harbour Shops.

During the festival, taking place 1-5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, and Sunday, Jan. 14, scoops of ice cream will be served from vendor booths in the retail plaza’s courtyard.

Sweets purveyors include Boca Raton’s 32 Bubbles, Dania Beach’s Jaxson’s Ice Cream Parlor and Coral Spring’s Cherry Smash, along with Miami-Dade County shops Midtown Creamery, Wall’s Old Fashioned Ice Cream, Mr. Kream, Dasher and Crank, Le Zoo, Sweet Melody and Fireman Derek’s Bake Shop.

The reason these scoops deserve to be eaten in 50-degree weather is simple, says Tasha Cunningham, a spokeswoman for the University of Miami/Jackson Health Foundation. The festival is a fundraiser for Holtz Children’s Hospital, which was long supported with donations from Bal Harbour Shops developer Stanley Whitman before he passed away in May 2017.

“Eating ice cream, even in the cold, helps the kids,” Cunningham argues. “C’mon, it won’t even be that cold this weekend. Just bundle up and eat some sweets.”

Finding your unicorn

In other ice-cream news, the unicorn trend persists (remember Unicorn Frappuccinos?) thanks to Taiyaki NYC Miami (143 NW 23rd St.), the ice-cream parlor inside the recently opened 1-800-Lucky food hall.

Taiyaki, which specializes in fish-shaped waffle cones, will unveil Unicorn Taiyaki, a rainbow scoop of soft serve topped with an edible “horn” and “ears” brushed with edible gold leaf. This is the first time the treat, popular at Taiyaki’s New York flagship, is available in Miami.

The cone costs $8 and will be available starting Friday, Jan. 12.

Ice Cream We Love will take place 1-5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, and Sunday, Jan. 14, at Bal Harbour Shops, 9700 Collins Ave. Admission is $15-$90. For more information, call 305-585-4483 or go to or 954-356-4364
