Welcome to the Eat Beat Newsletter. Happy Groundhog Day. I predict six more weeks of sea urchin. And happy Super Bowl weekend. It's a matchup of cheesesteaks vs. chowdah (advantage chowdah), Wawa vs. Dunkin' Donuts (advantage Wawa) and Eagles vs. Patriots (advantage Brady and Beli-cheat). My prediction: Commercials 62, New England 34, Philadelphia 17.
(Are you ready for some bar food?)
Super doings: My colleague Phillip Valys compiled a roundup of 25 Super Bowl watch parties across South Florida (I suppose 52 for SBLII would have been overkill) ... Many eateries are getting into the spirit with deals. Pollo Tropical is offering $20 off every $100 spent for catering orders ... Hooters is offering chicken wing packs to go ($50 for 50, $70 for 70 with sides of blue cheese and ranch dressing). The offer is not valid at the BeachPlace (Fort Lauderdale) or Miami Bayside locations ... Angelo Elia Pizza Bar is offering 50 percent off meatballs and pizzas on Sunday at all five locations ... Bokamper's has brought back its original Killer B Wings and is offering 15 for the price of 10 today (Friday Feb. 2) ... Boston's on the Beach in Delray Beach is throwing a Patriot-friendly bash Sunday. Tickets are $110 and include premium liquor and food. Philadelphia Eagles fans can find hospitable surroundings at The Parrot Lounge in Fort Lauderdale.
(Naked and afraid at the B Ocean Resort.)
A leaky ship: There are meals and there are ordeals. I endured the latter for my review meal this week, a trip to Naked Crab at the B Ocean Resort in Fort Lauderdale that I called "the most traumatizing experience in my two years of restaurant critiquing." The scary dinner featured cooking oil instead of garlic butter as an accompaniment to overcooked Alaskan crab legs, an overpriced rack of lamb special ($65) and a hotel lobby restroom with plumbing issues.
(Seafood festival coming to Mizner Park Feb. 10-11.)
Events: The inaugural Boca Raton Seafood and Music Festival will be held Feb. 10-11 at Mizner Park Amphitheater. Admission is $5 and includes a lineup of live bands. Food and drinks from local restaurants will be available at additional cost. [More] ... The South Beach Wine and Food Festival (Feb. 21-25) is fast approaching and SouthFlorida.com is giving away tickets to the Burger Bash (Feb. 23) and weekend Grand Tasting (Feb. 24-25) in Miami Beach. You can enter here. Some Fort Lauderdale events are already sold out ... Tickets are on sale for Burger Beast's Hamburger House Party at Magic City Casino (March 10), the CrawDebauchery crawfish and music festival in Pompano Beach (March 24) and the Las Olas Wine and Food Festival (April 20).
Oh great, just what we need: Another five Italian restaurants. All under the same roof. Phillip Valys previews La Centrale, a three-story Italian food hall, which is scheduled to debut this month in Miami and feature an Italian-inspired grocery, cafes, a bar, a cooking school and a wine cellar. The restaurant is the second in Broward County for the Miami-born Pincho Factory. [More]
Three stars for the Portly Pig Gastropub in Dania Beach, an unassuming watering hole in a shopping plaza where bar food is done right and on the lighter side. Nothing is fried and the flavors are very good, including a 1-pound meatball, jerk baked chicken wings and shrimp-stuffed poblano. [More]
The no-reservations Honor Bar is connected to Palm Beach Grill in Palm Beach. [More]
These Miami-Dade County restaurants received 3.5- or 4-star reviews by SouthFlorida.com's dining critics. [More]
