Sued by Trump, chef Jose Andres says 'we are all immigrants' at tribute dinner

Proclaiming “We are all immigrants,” chef Jose Andres took unabashed swipes at the policies of the U.S. president who is suing him during his speech as an honoree at the South Beach Wine and Food Festival’s $500-a-plate tribute dinner on Saturday.

Amid a luxe meal that included Roederer Cristal Champagne and oyster vichyssoise with caviar, Andres peeled off his chef’s coat to reveal a t-shirt that read “I am an immigrant.” The Spanish-born chef and restaurateur, who became a U.S. citizen three years ago, pledged solidarity with all immigrants, including those who overstay visas or come to the U.S. illegally. Many end up working in restaurant kitchens.

Emcee Anthony Bourdain called Andres “my hero” for pulling out of a restaurant deal at a Donald Trump hotel during Trump’s presidential campaign, triggering a lawsuit from Trump that is ongoing.

In stirring remarks that drew a prolonged standing ovation, Andres concluded by saying, “The American dream of the 21st century is to be an America of inclusion, not of exclusion.”
