Fashion goes high at circus-themed runway show

Plantation aerialist staging circus-themed fashion show in Hallandale Beach.

Cirque du Fashion will fuse a runway show with a circus performance, with models dropping from the ceiling, and singing and dancing down a catwalk.

Instead of traditional models, the event, which will take place Oct. 22 at the Sirona Fine Art Gallery at Gulfstream Park, will feature silk aerialists, acrobats, dancers and a singer. Claudia Malco, a fashion stylist and aerialist who lives in Plantation, created the show.

"Those are my two passions," she says. "I just wanted to do something that brought those two together, something different. I'm always looking to do something innovative."

The show will feature conventional clothing as well as extravagant costumes. Malco styled the traditional looks, which will be available for sale at her online boutique, Chosen Skyn ( The costumes were produced by three guest designers: Olga Saretsky, of Miami's Kikimora Studio; Gena Cristiani, of Sarasota's Gena's Design; and Leonora Nikitin, of Fort Lauderdale's Designs by Nora.

Each performer will also play an everyday character, such as a housewife and a businesswoman.

"The message of my show is, 'How you dress is how you feel,' " Malco says. "Whether you're a stay-at-home mom or a businesswoman, I feel if you dress your best, you'll boost your self-esteem."

Malco will be among the aerialists performing at the show, wearing an outfit by Cristiani. Her character's theme is "Fifty Shades of Grey."

In real life, she often assumes the stay-at-home mom and businesswoman roles. She quit her physiotherapy job after having her first son, about two years ago. That's when she began working on her boutique, at which she sells clothing and accessories from local shops and online wholesalers.

"I want to encourage young women and women of all ages to dress the way they want to feel," she says. "I think by showing different outfit possibilities and different styles and color options, young women may see it's not all about brand names and what's pushed in the media."

Cirque du Fashion will begin 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22 at the Sirona Fine Art Gallery at Gulfstream Park, 600 Silks Run, Suite 1240, in Hallandale Beach. Admission is $20-$35. Go to
