Sommore: the royal treatment

It's not only for her witty jokes that Sommore has been dubbed the "Queen of Comedy" by her fans. Sommore, 47, enjoys spoiling herself and living large. When she's not working, you'll find her shopping at Bal Harbour or maybe over at the Collection, test-driving a new car. Her motto is, "The true secret to success is to live and look good doing it."

Sommore, who was a headliner on 2001's "Queens of Comedy" tour and the subsequent Showtime special (alongside Mo'Nique, Laura Hayes and Adele Givens) has starred in movies such as "Friday After Next" and "Soul Plane."

The part-time South Florida resident will perform Friday through Sunday at the Fort Lauderdale Improv.

If you weren't a standup comedian, what would you do?

I would be living in South Florida [full-time], owning a nightclub and taking full advantage of the nightlife.

What are some of your favorite places in South Florida?

I love the spas. I believe in working hard and partying hard and in between getting pampered. We have some of the best amenities when it comes to pampering and living like a queen. "Bliss Spa" is my middle name.

What's the strangest thing a fan has told you?

My career has spanned over 20 years, and I've had fans often tell me how they would sneak off and watch my work performance when they were kids. I find it flattering.

Do you have any advice for the future "queens"?

I think that self-esteem issues are truly a part of life. I would encourage young women to try to find balance and not be too hard on themselves. Over the years, I found that education empowers me. The more I know, the stronger I feel. Through education, you can find a passion that will take your life to new heights. Then, you're shining.

Who are your favorite comedians?

When it comes to standup, I am a truly a fan. Women comics are my favorites, especially Joan Rivers, Wanda Sykes and Kathleen Madigan. The list goes on. And did I mention Sommore?

Are you working on any new projects?

I just finished taping "Comic View," which will air on BET next year. I'm also getting ready and preparing to shoot another standup comedy special at either the end of this year or early next year. Other than that, I'm constantly on the road touring the country at clubs and venues.

Sommore will perform Friday through Sunday at the Fort Lauderdale Improv, at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, 5700 Seminole Way, in Hollywood. Tickets cost $25. Go to
