Books and Books rides into Wynwood with temporary 'analog' shop

New Wynwood pop-up @BooksandBooks shop to specialize in bikes, vinyl, discount books and #LEBO art.

Miami literary maestro Mitchell Kaplan has added another chapter to his Books and Books empire.

Kaplan's new pop-up bookstore Books + Books + Bikes + LEBO, which opened last week in Wynwood, houses a cache of discounted books, used vinyl records, bicycles and art prints by Miami muralist David "LEBO" Le Batard. If there is a word to explain this uncommon collision of literature, music and two-wheelers, Kaplan says it's "analog."

"I've always had this idea of bringing a bunch of independent businesses together under one roof," he says. "I might even sell old typewriters here at some point. We're only selling tangible things, objects that are not digitized."

Kaplan hatched the pop-up concept with Nico Stasi, owner of the No Boundaries Sport bicycle shop across the street from Books and Books in Coral Gables. The rest came together "organically," Kaplan says, after both men reached out to LEBO, who painted the storefront's facade and sells unframed prints inside.

"There really was no grand plan to all of this. I just wanted to mix it up," says Kaplan, a self-described "bike hobbyist" who every day rides five miles to his Coral Gables bookstore. "I've always thought it's cool to have destinations that fuse different things together, like cafes and books."

The pop-up, which Kaplan plans to operate "for a year or more," occupies a squat warehouse storefront blocks west of the jumble of art galleries and brewpubs on Northwest Second Avenue. The bookstore's name is painted in black, bubble lettering. Inside, the space is cavernous. Milk crates filled with used vinyl records rest on tables near the entrance. Neat rows of bicycles and helmets surround the warehouse's center columns. Tall, wooden bookshelves hug the outer walls, which also carry racks of athletic clothing.

But the shop's biggest allure, Kaplan believes, are its books, a surplus of some 2,000 hardcovers, paperbacks and coffee-table tomes that don't fit in other Books and Books locations. Most are out-of-print and remaindered titles, which are discounted from 50 to 80 percent off the retail price.

Kaplan says the bookstore has attracted little foot traffic so far, but a grand-opening celebration is planned for Tuesday, June 28, with a DJ, light bites and an open-mike reading by VONA/Voices, a writing workshop for people of color co-founded by author Junot Diaz.

Books + Books + Bikes + LEBO is open 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday-Sunday at 2602 NW Fifth Ave., in Miami. The bookstore is planning a grand-opening party at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 28, with a DJ and an open-mike reading. Call 305-442-4408 or go to BooksandBooks.com.
